(p. 3, 50)This, the twelfth in a series on pioneers and explorers, tells of the life and expeditions of Ludwig Leichhardt. Leichhardt, born in Germany, evaded the draft by going to Australia where he worked as a biologist. His first expedition, from the Darling Downs to the Gulf of Carpentaria, was a great success. However, on the return journey to Port Essington he ran into troubles with the Indigenous Australians and lost horses and men. On his second expedition he intended to cross Australia from east to west, but this failed. In 1848 he set out on his third expedition to the Swan River but somewhere en route to the Gulf of Carpentaria he lost his life.
