This article, the sixth in a series on Australian pioneers and explorers, tells the story of Edward John Eyre who was born in Hornsea in 1815 and who came to Australia as a squatter. It describes his expeditions to Mount Arden, the discovery of Lake Torrens, the naming of Mount Deception, of the murder of Baxter by two of the Aboriginal carriers, and the loyalty of another of the Aboriginal men, Wylie.
