Bass and Flinders Put Their Imprint on the Map : Stirring Adventures in the 'Tom Thumb', Bernard Cronin , 1937 single work column
This article, the fourth in a series on Australian pioneers and explorers, tells of how George Bass became the sailor surgeon on the Reliance and of how he met Matthew Flinders. The two men, with Govenor Hunter's permission, set out in a whale-boat to discover the termination of the Blue Mountains so they could gain access to the interior of the country. Bass later discovered the straits and then circumnavigated 'Van Diemen's' (sic) land.
