Author's note: Pygmalion, king of Cyprus, was a noted sculptor. Tired of making models of the gods, he began to shape the image of a beautiful woman whom he named Galatea. Falling in love with her, even before she was finished, he begged the gods to give her life, so he could make her his wife.
