An intelligent counter girl wary of attachments because her dead sister was a single mother eventually accepts an invitation from a young customer who always leaves with a puzzling silent farewell. Then illness and a posting separate them for 6 months when both think they have been deserted. After a mutual snub at re-encounter he steps in front of a lorry and in the crisis her hostility crumbles. A happy ending is ensured when she eventually learns his farewell words.
