Notes

  • Editor's note: 'John Thomas Wilson, the managing partner of an extensive Sheffield House and ironmongery in Sydney ... and a leader of society and finance and religious movements, seduced a young Scottish widow named Cavill and, after safely getting her out of the country on a promise of marriage, took under his protection a damsel named Taylor who had deserted her husband in Tasmania and come to Sydney to seek work as an actress. Wilson proposed at one stage to hire the Sydney Theatre for her.'
