  • Editor's note: The prize of fifty guineas given by the New South Wales government for the best Commonwealth day ode has been secured by Mr. George Essex Evans, of Toowoomba, Queensland. The following is Mr. Essex Evans's prize ode (the additional Northern Territory verse, as suggested by our Daly River correspondent, we insert, printed in italics):-
  • The inserted 'Northern Territory' verse reads:

    And then our Cinderella lone,

    Who art so near and yet so far;

    Destined to be - though now unknown-

    A brilliant star.
