AbstractHistoryArchive Description

'"Polly in the Telephone" presents at first as a boy-meets-girl comedy. Before long, though, issues emerge in their relationship: evasions couched as wordplay; flight and avoidance - in brief - fear of intimacy.

'The Boy takes off to another city and the relationship is carried on via the phone. The Boy is anxious he will mess up this precious thing he has going with The Girl, aware of his inability to communicate his feelings adequately. The Boy pays obsessive attention to the sounds around him. Before long he hears the voice of The Girl in them and he begins to engage these sounds in conversation.'
