  • This essay was first presented as the keynote address at the annual Association for the Study of Australian Literature (ASAL) conference 'The Colonial Present: Australian Writing for the 21st Century', held at the University of Queensland in Brisbane from 1-4 July 2007, and subsequently at the Association of University English Teachers of South Africa (AUETSA) annual meeting, 'Worlds, Texts, Critics', which took place at the University of Kwazulu-Natal in Durban from 8-11 July 2007.
