Author's note: This poem mentions two aboriginal creation stories from the Southwest. One is how the magpies lifted up the sky with boulders generating the first sunrise, the rays of which coloured all life except the magpies who only received a dash of white - but a beautiful song. The other is about a pretty girl who keeps spurning her suitors until the arrival of two Cockatoo men.
