  • Author's note: This poem mentions two aboriginal creation stories from the Southwest. One is how the magpies lifted up the sky with boulders generating the first sunrise, the rays of which coloured all life except the magpies who only received a dash of white - but a beautiful song. The other is about a pretty girl who keeps spurning her suitors until the arrival of two Cockatoo men.

'Archie Weller clearly shows himself as a poet for the underdog feeling a misfit at his boarding school and after leaving, immersing himself in Aboriginality absorbing the lifestyle and legends of a wide circle of Aboriginal friends from all walks of life. He explains his poems as important moments in his life.' (Source: Booktopia website)
