Raunga is the daughter of a white man she calls Padre and an Aboriginal woman. She believes her mother is a crocodile who has left them for now. In her stead, Raunga cares for her younger siblings, Anabrn and Purelko. Purelko is disabled and needs to be watched and fed by hand.
Raunga recounts her life with Padre and Mother, and the history of her land, which she calls Dulbu country.
