Although no author is named on the title page, the announcement of a prize for 'Children of the State' (Sydney Mail,19 October 1904: 966) indicates that both that novel and On a Red Sand-Hill are by Emma Smith. E. Morris Miller lists Emma Smith as the author of this work, with a note 'Binder's title gives pseudonym as 'John Primrose'.'
