Notes

  • Epigraph: In 1841, John Eyre led the first recorded overland expedition from Fowler's Bay, in South Australia, to Albany in Western Australia. His party consisted of Wylie, an Albany aborigine, Baxter, a European overseer and two adolescent aborigines from the eastern states. During the crossing, which took four months, Baxter was shot dead and the two eastern aborigines absconded.
