This volume under the title of Sail Ho! tells the story of the first twenty-one years of my life. It contains chiefly a full account of my voyages for six years (1898-1904) as an Apprentice, Able Seaman, and Second Mate in cargo-carrying sailing vessels under the flag of the British Merchant Navy.'(vii-x).

Sail Ho! is of special bibliographical interest. It is the first book of major Cape Horn sailing reminiscences issued in a first edition in Australia. It is also the first book set in type in Australia with 'American styling' for photolitho reproduction in the U.S.A. Its jacket design is the first by an Australian artist to have been used internationally in the Australian, British, and American editions of a book.
