AbstractHistoryArchive Description

A stage play based on the 1886 novel by British author 'Maxwell Gray' (Mary Gleed Tuttiett). The novel was also adapted to the screen by a number of filmmakers, including Raymond Longford's 1914 film The Silence of Dean Maitland; a 1915 version, with 'picture play' (screenplay) written by British author Herbert H. Hainton; a 1915 American film produced under the title Sealed Lips; and Ken G. Hall's 1934 film The Silence of Dean Maitland, with the screenplay written by Gayne Dexter and Edmund Barclay.

Notes

  • The following note appears in the Free-Lance 1.8 (11 June 1896): 5): 'Lewis Scott ... has sent the manuscript of the play to Beerhohm Tree for consideration. Unless it has been vastly improved since it was seen here [Melbourne] the Free Lance is prepared to wager its safe return to its Sydney bourn.'

  • The earliest production of Scott's play established to date occurred at the Adelaide Bijou Theatre on 3 February 1894 (ctd. Sydney Morning Herald, 10 February 1984, p.5).
