Author's note: 'Marie Remembers' is spoken by Marie Louise Girardon, who disguised herself as a man after she suffered the disgrace of having an illegitimate child. She obtained a post as a steward on the Recherche, D'Entrecasteaux's ship. Her father was a royal gardener at Versailles.
