Nineteenth-Century Travel Writing

Scottish born John McDouall Stuart (1815-1866) was an accomplished inland explorer, who undertook six expeditions between 1858 and 1862. This is an edited collection of his journals. The Editor's preface emphasised the importance of Stuart's explorations, labelling him as the most significant Australian explorer. Recorded over his explorations from, 1858 to 1862 Stuart’s journals were written during his party's journey to "fix" the centre of the continent. Presented in diary form and detailing latitude and time for each entry, the text described the environment travelled through and the experiences of the exploring party. The work concluded with an appendix of botanical specimens collected throughout the expedition.
