Notes

  • Author's note: In his Foreword, the author explains the origin of the selection's title: '... we have learned to understand the true value of "contrasts" with the realisation that it is only the clouds that give to the sky its real beauty and that only on the darker nights are to be seen the stars in their greater brilliance.'
  • The selection is divided into two sections: Part I 'Along the Byways'; Part II 'Light and Shade'.
