Ferguson and Merton, two aspiring unemployed artists and writers, are forced to leave their Brisbane boarding house, and end up working with an unemployment relief gang clearing prickly pear on the Condamine Plains, on the Darling Downs.

Notes

  • 'On the Condamine' was later published in Steele Rudd's selection of short stories, For Life and Other Stories (1908), where it appeared in three chapters. This story appeared as Chapter I, 'Down on Their Luck', and Chapter II, 'Prickly Pear'.
  • Appeared in Steele Rudd's Magazine with illustrations by Arthur Hingston.
