'Mary Had a Little Lamb' : The Original Mary Interviewed, Ralph Darlington , single work column

An interview with Mary Hughes (nee Thomas), allegedly the subject of the nursery rhyme 'Mary Had a Little Lamb', written by a Miss Jane Burl in 1847. Mary lived on a farm in the Vale of Llangollen in North Wales and assisted her father with orphan lambs, which often became her pets. The lamb which followed her to school was named Billy. She was seven years old at the time.

Darlington disputes the U. S. claim that the poem was written by the poet Horatio Hale in 1890 about a Miss Mary Sawyer.
