— Review of The End of a Childhood and Other Stories Henry Handel Richardson , 1934 selected work short story ;
(p. 225)
Note: Editor's note: If an Australian critic were to claim for her writers the production of one of the greatest stories of the century (and one such critic claimed that years ago for Henry Handel Richardson), the majority of her citizens would probably put it down to overheated enthusiasm or lack of wider knowledge and perspective. But Mr. Gerald Gould, the leading literary critic of the London Observer has a reputation in Europe and America, as well as in Great Britain. Australasian readers will, therefore, be interested in his considered opinion of this writer, who received her schooling in the Presbyterian Ladies' College, Melbourne, but has now lived in England for many years.
