AbstractHistoryArchive Description

'Specula is a play for two voices and music by poet, playwright and drama critic Alison Croggan [sic]. A man hears the voices of angels, and is obsessed with medieval women mystics and the discernment of witchcraft.

'His long-suffering wife tries to keep him focused in everyday reality. On another level which is perhaps his mind or perhaps the past, the man acts as inquisitor to the woman: she is imprisoned [and] tormented by the man. The man reaches out to her in tenderness, but she has walled herself in to shut out her pain. The poetic, the mystical, sexual and psychological are intertwined in this powerful portrayal of an intimate human relationship.'
