Nicholas Parsons admits to occasional surges of anger when faced with the choice between 'children or career'. Parsons's Dead Heart was relatively successful in the early 1990s, but he was unable to generate any interest in his later plays. Baranay describes the way in which she used Somerset Maugham's The Razor's Edge, and his main character, Larry Darrell, to shape her novel Lotus Feet. Baranay used 'exactly [Maugham's] structure and his constellation of characters, only they live 60 years later and are Australians rather than Americans in Europe.'
