Evermore, Sean Williams , single work short story science fiction

'The protagonist and his companions are engrams – electronic copies of biological humans – sent on a journey in a small probe to a distant star. An accident near their destination means they miss the star, and only the work of one of their number keeps the probe working as a viable environment for its sentient cargo.'
