'It would be possible to collect, from newspaper files and MSS. in the hands of Kendall's relatives and friends, a body of poetic work probably as large as that included in the current edition of his poems - less valuable than we have, but much of it hardly less interesting. This characteristic piece was contributed to the Empire.' - accompanying note, the Bulletin, 26 May, 1900.

Note that Kendall wrote two different poems which came to be titled 'To Charles Harpur' (ie. an earlier work, first published in the Empire in September 1861, and this later poem, first published in the Sydney Morning Herald in May 1863.

According to Reed (1966), Kendall forwarded the MS of this poem to Charles Harpur.
