'Vance Palmer (1885-1959), Louis Esson (1879-1943), Frank Wilmot (1881-1942) and Frederick Sinclaire (1881-1954) were men of the same generation who came to share similar cultural and political views. Melbourne v/as their key intellectual miilieu in Australia. Wilmot lived there continuously and Palmer, Esson and Wilmot for long periods between 1905 and 1930. All participated in Melbourne's cultural and intellectual life and Palmer, Esson and Wilmot married into Melbourne families.' (Introduction, first paragraph)
