AbstractHistoryArchive Description

'A grisly murder, inherited madness, and a family in ruins…

'Patrick Mayne was a poor Irishman who emigrated to Australia in the first half of the twentieth century. Settling in Brisbane, he built his fortune as a butcher, landowner, and town councillor, and left an extraordinary legacy: a deathbed confession of murder that had a profound impact on the lives of his wife, his children and the colonial society he helped to build.

'Inspired by the book The Mayne Inheritance by Rosamond Siemon, Errol O’Neill has crafted a taught psychological thriller that reverberates through several generations of the Mayne family and the society they generously supported.'

Notes

  • Errol O'Neill was commissioned by former La Boite artistic director Sue Rider in 1999, to write this drama.
  • Author's note: Ultimately, playwrights don't and can't deal definitively with questions of proving what happened or didn't happen, or why. The dramatist's task is to search out possible explanations for action, ponder on the motivations of characters, and speculate about the clashes of will between characters and the outcomes of those clashes...The Mayne Inheritance - a play - does not claim to present the definitive version of the story of the Mayne family. It is rather an attempt to gather the threads of the story which are known or knowable, combine these with other thematic considerations, and put them all into a broad social and historical context, ultimately saying something about the human condition. pp.9-10.

Production Details

  • First produced as a La Boite Theatre Company commission at The Roundhouse Theatre, Kelvin Grove Village, Brisbane, 13 May - 5 June 2004. Director: Sean Mee.
