'The story opens in a village in the western counties of England. A young artist falls in love with a local girl, Kate A., and resolves to marry her and go to Australia. They put off the marriage till after they land in Australia, and are nearly shipwrecked on the voyage. They marry happily and have a child but the brother and sister who accompanied them on the voyage fall into dissipation, the sister losing her character and dying soon after. The remaining characters return to England and the sister's death is avenged.' (PB)
