Launched in 1924 by Joseph Patterson, publisher of the New York Daily News and Robert McCormick, publisher of the Chicago Tribune, Liberty: A Weekly for http://www.austlit.edu.au/austlit/page/C490796#Everybody went head to head with and Collier's. From its inception, the magazine set out to become more topical, daring and exciting than its competitors. Information was presented in a style heavily influenced by the emerging motion picture industry and focused on the most sensational and popular issues. As a result the magazine flourished for more than three decades, at one stage reaching a circulation of over 3 million.
Initially published by Patterson and McCormick's Coloroto Corporation, this changed in 1925 when they founded Liberty Weekly Inc. The magazine changed hands in 1931 when it was acquired by Bernarr Macfadden. He published it through his Liberty Publishing Corporation and later through Macfadden Publications until losing control of the magazine in 1942. It was subsequently acquired by Liberty Magazine Inc.
Among the authors whose works appeared in Liberty were: Achmed Abdullah, H. Bedford-Jones, Walter R. Brooks, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Robert W. Chambers, James F. Dwyer, Paul Ernst, Floyd Gibbons, Murray Leinster, Edison Marshall, Sax Rohmer, and Arthur Conan Doyle

Liberty was revived in 1971 as a quarterly nostalgia-oriented magazine published by the Liberty Library Corporation.

A free promotional copy of the first issue, dated May 4, 1924 and titled The $25.000 Prize Name Weekly, was included as a supplement to Chicago Tribune and Sunday News of New York.
