'Family saga moving from India and southern Africa to Queensland, Australia. After her mother's death, Rani Ashiramsi leaves her home in Bombay to join her father in the African village of Saringal. There she falls in love with plantation manager, Willem Dewar. But Willem is married, and when Rani discovers she is pregnant she decides to make a new life for herself and her child, bringing her to a marriage of convenience and Queensland's cane valley.
