Discusses the use of biblical motifs in Elizabeth Jolley's novel, particularly the metaphors of the garden of Eden and the promised land in the postcolonial context. In a novel permeated with biblical allusions, Jolley 'portrays the costs of both cultural and social exclusivity and of breaking down barriers erected to preserve identity' (97).
