AbstractHistoryArchive Description

Richard III depicts the Machiavellian rise to power and subsequent short reign of Richard III of England. Although the play is grouped among Shakespeare's histories it is also regarded as a tragedy. As with most of Shakespeare's works Richard III has been performed numerous times in Australia and has also been subject to burlesque treatment, especially during the mid to late-nineteenth century.

  • Among the productions known to have burlesqued or satirised Richard III are:

    • The Yellow Dwarf (pantomime, 1872).

A brief, but favourable review of Mr Anderson's performance of Richard the Third. The reviewer considers it the best Mr Anderson has offered while in Ballarat. Shortage of space prevents a longer notice, but a full review will be given after the next performance.

A lengthy and favourable review of the previous night's performance of Richard the Third. Mr Anderson's portrayal of Richard was excellent and showed a deep understanding of the complexities of character. The supporting actors were adequate, but showed no outstanding features.
