'Sal feels as if he has been on the run forever ... but from what? In a world where the huge, red-sanded deserts are ruled by Stone Mages and the vast coastlines by Sky Wardens, any child with magic ability is taken away to the Haunted City to be trained in the Change. Fundelry is a small town much like any other in the Strand. The people have little tolerance for anyone who stands out, and Sal and his father are strangers, running from someone . . . or something. Sal is rescued from the local bully by Shilly and her teacher Lodo, a mysterious tattooed man who seems to know more about Sal than Sal himself. And Sal′s father seems to want to stay put for a while. But soon the Sky Wardens will come to Fundelry. Before then, Sal must uncover the connection between Lodo and the mother he never met, in order to escape a fate that seems to have been chosen for him before he was even born . . .'. y separately published work icon The Sky Warden and the Sun Sean Williams , Pymble : Voyager , 2002 Z966642 2002 single work novel fantasy young adult 'The second book in the trilogy opens with Sal and Shilly heading for the Interior, fleeing the Alcaide and the Syndic and following the only clue they have: the name of Lodo's old teacher, Skender Van Haasteren. As hinted in Sal's dream, they are followed by Tom's brother, Tait, and his senior Sky Warden, Shom Behenna, the new Selector for the Fundelry region. Sal knows they are being pursued. He and Shilly have no choice but to use their incomplete training in the Change in order to survive. The tension between Behenna and Sal is a central dynamic of the book with Behenna (the Sky Warden of the title) regarding Sal as his means of rising rapidly through the ranks, and Sal seeing Behenna as a symbol of everything from which he and Shilly are fleeing. It slowly becomes apparent that Sal is the focus of a bitter tug-of-war between several rival factions of a secretive group called the Weavers, and Sal's relationship with Shilly is also tested as he is unsure of what he feels for her'.
