I wrote Cat on Hot Bricks because of a chance meeting with an old Spanish peasant woman, when I was travelling alone by train from Spain to the south of France. During the brief hour I spent with her, I knew I must write about her....In the book she occupies only a page and a quarter at the end of one chapter, and four and a quarter in the next.
