Notes

  • Richard Fotheringham, in his introduction to Hazard (Australian Plays for the Colonial Stage :1834-1899) describes the play as 'a significant early attempt to represent an Australian city on the stage and to begin to develop the idea of a city high and low life, suburb and slum, as a social map of emerging industrial society.'

Production Details

  • First produced at the Victoria Theatre, Sydney, 5 July 1872. According to Richard Fotheringham, the prouduction was apparently a collaboration between Cooper, the entrepreneur James J. Bartlett and American entertainer Frank Hussey.

    At the end of the Sydney season Bartlett took the production to San Francisco where it was performed for eight nights at the Metropolitan Theatre in October 1872. Another production was then taken to Chicago and other American locations by Hussey.
