'Max Harris, Adelaide born writer, poet, critic, bookseller and newspaper columnist, who is widely known as the victim of the Ern Malley hoax and for founding the literary journal Angry Penguins. Max deserves to be acknowledged for much more than this. Angry Penguins only took up six years of his life. The hoax and subsequent obscenity trial were humiliating, but he learnt from them, regained his confidence and went on to become one of the most significant figures in Australian literary and art modernism. Max had a regular column in the Australian which was widely read, and his later important journals, Australian Letters and Australian Book Review were leading journals in their field.
