Notes

  • A witty satirical poem on the Australian obsession with sporting prowess and sporting heroes, and the corresponding disregard for intellectual culture. The subject of the poem was the champion rower Edward Trickett (1851-1916), who was idolised in the Australian colonies during the later 1870s.
