  • 'This poem was one of the 196 submitted for the Melbourne Exhibition guineas. The judges, while admitting that it was far and away the best thing sent in, very properly "jacked" it. They wanted a cantata on the next great International Exposition - not a poem on a cockroach.' - accompanying note in the Freeman's Journal.
