Author's note: ' In less than a decade Melbourne's western suburbs went the way of much of Australia. They changed from powerful industries that thrived on electricity and oil, to a kind of bewildered mixture of derelict factories, fast food outlets, video shops and houses described by estate agents as 'renovator's dreams'.
