Notes:
Author's note: * They were so far unappreciated by the public of his own days, as to drop all but still-born from the press ; and this result helped no doubt to fasten more deeplywithin him the strange malady whereof he died. At all events, it led him, in the bitterness of his spirit, to cancel all the copies of his book that remaind unsold, and even to buy back others for the purpose of destroying them.
Notes:
Erratum published in the Empire (3 July 1857): 5: 'In some lines of mine on the poet Collins, published in the Empire of the 8th intant, for "sunlight" read surlight - that is, over or extraordinary light, the light of supreme genius. The prefix here is perfectly allowable, though perhaps never so used before, except by myself in the Tower of the Dream.' C. H.
