Commissioned by English actor and theatre manager Robert William Elliston. Two of Elliston's sons had settled in Tasmania and he wished to have 'a drama introduced at his theatre, which should have that spot for its locale'.

[6] no. 439 1831; (p. 2) The editor of the Colonial Times is savage in his dismissal of Moncrieff's melodrama. The editor asserts that Moncrieff displays 'odd mistakes and gross ignorance of ... the affairs of this Colony' and the playwright's statement that he 'spared neither research nor labour' in preparing his script is misleading and detrimental to the residents of Van Diemen's Land. -
