First performed at the St Andrew's Day concert of the Highland Society on the 30th October 1878. The song was also sung at the inauguration of the Commonwealth of Australia and perfomed by massed bands at the federal capital celebration in Canberra, 1901. Officially proclaimed the national anthem of Australia on 19 April, 1984.

This version of 'Advance Australia Fair' comprises only two verses; the second and fourth verses of the original are omitted. Also, it uses the gender-neutral words proposed by the National Australia Day Committe in 1981.
