BiographyHistory

'In 1993 a collaborative Indigenous books project commenced. The idea was to put together a series of contemporary Indigenous classroom literacy resources. The plan was to go into Indigenous communities and facilitate a process for Indigenous adults, adolescents and children to tell/write their own stories to become part of the series.

Initially the project was funded by the Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn Catholic Education Office and later by the Commonwealth Department of Education Science and Training. When funding from those sources came to an end an entity was needed to continue the work. In late 2002 Indij Readers Ltd was established.

Indij Readers Ltd is a not-for-profit publishing company that develops and publishes contemporary, Indigenous literacy materials for students learning to read and write. We are dedicated to showcasing Australian Indigenous artists through our books and driven by a desire to improve literacy statistics. At Indij Readers, we want books - lots of books - that truly interest Indigenous students and inspire them to pick up a book, have a go, see themselves, learn and have fun along the way. We also want non Indigenous students to have the same experiences AND to learn more about the first Australians at the same time.' Source: www.indijreaders.com.au (Sighted 08/010/2007).
