BiographyHistory

Prior to enlisting in the Australian Imperial Force in May 1915, Stephen Bartlett – who later wrote under the pseudonym 'Gurney Slade' – was working as a pearler in Broome, Western Australia.

Information sent to the Australian War Memorial in 2008 states that Bartlett settled in England after World War I and 'became an author, writing under the name of Gurney Slade. He wrote some twenty books, mainly adventure stories for boys, and mostly set in Australia or the Middle East' ('The Bartlett Brothers from the 10th Light Horse.'
