The Victorian Nindethana Theatre was the first Indigenous-controlled theatre company. It was established at the Pram Factory in Melbourne in 1971, with Uncle Jack Charles and Uncle Bob Maza as founding members. The objective of the company as stated in the constitution was ‘the performance, encouragement and promotion of Aboriginal drama, music, art, literature, film production and other such cultural activities in the community’. Voting rights and control of the organisation were restricted to Aboriginal members.
