1 Andrew McGahan’s Theatre Life – a Personal Account Shaun Charles , 2019 single work obituary (for Andrew McGahan )
— Appears in: Overland [Online] , March 2019;

'In August of last year, an email popped up in my inbox from Andrew McGahan. I hadn’t seen Andrew in a while so it took me by surprise. Then I read the subject line – ‘The Big C’. A few days later I flew to Melbourne and drove a hire car to his house in Sunshine. I parked up the street, walked down to his house on the corner, and Andrew met me at the door. I was shocked at how thin he was. I knew he had been leading a healthier lifestyle, but the illness was also clearly starting to take hold. In the kitchen, he made me a cup of tea and I asked him whether he was sure of his diagnosis. Perhaps the doctors had made a mistake; I was only half-joking.'  (Introduction)

1 4 Dirty Apple Shaun Charles , Jonathan Henderson (composer), 2009 single work musical theatre young adult Dirty Apple is a compelling new opera which looks at how 21st century technology is changing the parameters of peer pressure and communication in our society, and its subsequent impact on individuals, families and the wider community. The story, which explores the explosive issue of cyber bullying, centres around a group of high school students who foolishly set in motion a seemingly harmless series of events which ultimately end in tragedy. Encamped alone in the ruins of the once great station homestead, Kuran House, the aging McIvor is desperate for an heir and sets his sights upon the boy.

'Set against the background of the Native Title debate, this sweeping saga switches between William's present and McIvor's troubled past. Before these storylines collide in a dramatic climax, we are introduced to devious housekeepers, family secrets and a mythical Australian landscape of ghosts and monsters.'
