BiographyHistory

John Sligo was educated at Otago University, New Zealand, and at Cambridge University, UK, before working for the United Nations and also as a producer for CBS TV in Rome. Sligo worked as a film and television journalist, a freelance writer, and wrote The New Zealand Imperial Myth (1966). In 1978, he won the Best First Novel category in the Air New Zealand / PEN Competition for The Cave: A Novel.

In the early 1980s, Sligo left Rome and settled in Australia, establishing a career as a full-time writer. As well as his novels and short stories, he wrote the recipe book Pasta, Rices and Other Vices and a collection of travel writings, Dining with Princes.
