BiographyHistory

John proclaimed and lived a life of suffering and abandonment of the soul to God. His virtues were recognised by Teresa of Avila and she promoted his cause in the Carmelite Order.
Many of John's writings, including his poetry, remain extant. His principle works were the Ascent of Mount Carmel, the Dark Night of the Soul and a Spiritual Canticle. John was made a Doctor of the Roman Catholic church in 1926.
