BiographyHistory

Herbert Dyce Murphy was born in 1879 to a wealthy Melbourne family. He led a varied life, including working for British military intelligence posing as a woman, whaling, army intelligence during World War I, orchardist, Antarctic explorer. He was the last survivor of the first Mawson expedition to Antarctica (1911-1914). From 1920-1965 (when he was 85) he was ice-master to the Norwegian whaling fleet in Antarctica.
