BiographyHistory

Edith Cowan was the first woman elected to an Australian parliament when in 1920 at the age of 60, she won the seat of West Perth. From an early age, she had campaigned for the rights of the less privileged, especially women. Edith Cowan University has been named in her honour and her portrait appeared on Australia's $50 note.
